Matt Holliday to the Cardinals
Y’know, I was sitting up last night thinking about the possibilities of the Cards acquiring Matt Holliday from the Rockies, since Holliday is on the trade block, as the Rockies have had three straight losing months in the still-young baseball season.
The next morning I find that a rumor about the Cards dealing for Holliday is up:
Anthony Reyes, Joe Mather, Nick Stavinhoa, Clay Mortensen or Mitchell Boggs, Chris Duncan
For Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes
The Cards need to seriously consider this movie. They have no protection in the lineup anywhere around Albert Pujols, except for the white hot hitters on a 1-year high (Let’s call it the Albert Haynesworth league), the bullpen is in shambles with the only thing constant about it being its blowups. Matt Holliday is a young, proven star who could have Pujols-esque numbers. Fuentes would probably get the franchise lead in saves if he were in St. Louis longevity wise. The two biggest needs in the clubhouse could be addressed right here with this move. At the same time, even I’m a bit hesitant with this move, because the Cards would giving up its future two prime young players, instead of five unproven players. It’s worked for the Cards in the past, but typically the players they traded away were not up to par.
Besides, what could another World Series run hurt anybody? As long as they can take control of the Central lead and stay above the fray (Chicago and Milwaukee).
Knowing how my teams always screw me like strangers in the Alps (as John Goodman perfectly said in The Big Lebowski, “This is what happens”), it probably won’t happen. Over half the league is interested in poking Colorado’s rear ends on the way to get Holliday.
But in the case that it does fall through, I’m not going to say anything about the Cards’ 2008 future.
But then again, the Jay Zygment Jinx (JZJ). Something along the lines of giving a player the contract he deserves but then refraining from completing the deal and giving him a swift kick in the ass on the way out the door (Isaac Bruce), or by simply not following through the correct procedures on topping a trade that would have happened if not for two ignorant Jay Zygment Jinx problems occurring (Chad Johnson), or the lousy treatment of players by not giving them the treatment they deserve (Torry Holt), or denying them sufficient opportunities to show why they’re the best runner in the league (Steven Jackson)!
But I digress.
Considering Holliday’s due $13.5 million next season, and the ornery fact that Boras is his agent, I don’t think the Cards would spend what it would take to keep him in St. Louis long term, which is what you’d want if you traded away some top prospects.
Well, a coveted championship would be nice, too. That’s all I care about!
And so I hope the Cardinals pull a Celtics move in this case.
That October 27, 2006 tonight was just as euphoric as June 17, 2008!
